2024 marked a record-breaking year for tourism across the Dominican Republic — with Las Terrenas and the Samaná Peninsula at the heart of this historic achievement.
In 2024, the Dominican Republic experienced remarkable growth in its tourism sector. Air arrivals increased by 6% compared to 2023 and by 32% compared to 2019, while tourism revenues grew by 12.5% year-over-year, reaching an impressive US$10.97 billion. The country welcomed visitors from around the world, with the United States accounting for 46% of tourists, followed by Canada at 17%, Colombia at 5%, Argentina at 4%, and Puerto Rico at 3%. Most air travelers entered the country through Punta Cana, which received 59% of arrivals, with other major airports including Las América’s (24%), Cibao (11%), Puerto Plata (5%), and La Romana (1%).
Tourist profiles in the first quarter of 2024 show that the primary purpose of travel was recreation, representing 87% of arrivals, with the vast majority staying in hotels (80%). The age range of travelers was broad, with 48.4% between 21 and 49 years old, and the gender distribution was nearly even, with 51.7% female and 48.3% male. These figures highlight the Dominican Republic’s continuing appeal as a top destination, culminating in a historic milestone as the country closed 2024 with more than 11 million visitors, reinforcing its position as a leading Caribbean tourism hub.
